Join the hybrid virtual/physical opening on Zoom and in person at the Gallery!
Continuing: Sat/Sun until December 12, 11-4pm
This year marks a very special occasion for us here at Xchanges Gallery and Studios. This is the 2nd year that we are presenting our Members’ exhibition in both a physical show in the Gallery and another, unique exhibition Online – in our virtual members show. Last year on Dec 12, 2020, we presented A Double Feature: Our First Online Exhibitions: Annual Xchanges Members show – A Moment in Time– online exhibition (Gallery presentation in June 2021) due to Covid) & Covid LIFE: Virtual Drawing in the Time of Covid– an online exhibition.
The Digital Shift at Xchanges is a real thing now and the virtual exhibitions continue to enable members who, for a variety of reasons are unable to participate in the physical show. These artists may be located in remote areas outside of Victoria or the province – and even outside Canada – can now participate in our annual celebration of Xchanges creativity. Alternatively, some of our local members in the physical show have also opted to share more work with us in the digital show. It looks like this is another new normal for us as we pivot in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, and it is a silver lining! More work (+50 pieces), more participation – we all win!
As you will see, both exhibitions offer a diverse range of content and media that are sure to provoke new thoughts, feelings, and conversations. Xchanges members are tackling personal issues with health and identity, responses to unmarked graves of Indigenous children, and the extraordinary beauty of trees in their own back yards. They are daring to experiment with digital tools and media, and bringing innovation to traditional techniques in a variety of media. We welcome your feedback at the bottom of the page and we would love to hear your thoughts about what you see and experience here.
As we close out 2021 with this wonderful exhibition, we wish you all the best of health, safety, and creativity in 2022 – may all your dreams, both big and small become reality this year!
We thank all of the volunteers who have contributed their precious volunteer time, energy, and commitment to making our exhibition program such a great success. In particular our Gallery Coordinators Cindy Wright and Jessica Deerman who trouble shoot and juggle many tasks to make this program a reality. Thank you all!

Kat Thompson, Downstream_2021 15" x 15" framed Acrylic and ink on mylar on board (2D) $290
Kathi paints multi-layered surfaces that emerge from her lived experience: a ferocious fear of water. An artist for nearly three decades, she holds a BFA from NSCAD University, Halifax, NS and a MAdEd, St.Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, NS.
In these paintings, I explore the duality I feel in relation to water: fear and awe. Through my art practice water becomes the metaphor for the time in which we live. These images dive into memories, visual references, scientific data and intuitive responses. I layer thin washes of oil paint as the image slowly emerges. Fluid shapes thrown onto the shore reflect remnants of their persistence. Water’s many moods. Through the memory of my lived experience, I deepen my grasp of the sublime beauty and the murky darkness of the turning tide.

Andy Lou Maple Leaves Mixed media on rice paper 27.5X16 in 2021 $1000副本
Andy Lou, a renowned full time artist in Victoria, B.C. was born in Beijing, China and educated in the United States. He received his M.F.A. degree from the University of North Texas in 1988, majoring in Painting and Drawing. After his graduation, he has been offering Contemporary Chinese Brush Painting Workshops throughout Canada, the U.S. and China. In his paintings, Andy adapts a variety of techniques and thoughts from the West, but emphasize his oriental originality. Employing Chinese brushes, rice paper and ink, mixing with watercolour, gouache and acrylic, Andy creates visual statements of the landscapes of North America. Vibrant colours play an important role in his art. He blends the old and the new to forge a contrast between ink and colour; between the ancient traditions of Chinese painting and the rapidly-changing world of Western art. Andy's mixed media, cross-cultural paintings have been exhibited and collected worldwide and he has received numerous awards.
My paintings are personal investigations into the interaction between Eastern and Western culture. They express how I see and feel about my subject; how I interpret it intuitively and spiritually by using visual language. The scenery of B.C. is a major subject in my painting. The snow-capped mountains, deep green forests, and clear blue skies have inspired me to create a personal interpretation of the harmony possible between man and nature. I combine Eastern and Western materials, techniques, and concepts to create visual statements of the West Coast. My Chinese aesthetic sensibility infuses Western ideas in my original art works.

I was so impressed with the artists who joined our life drawing online at Xchanges during Covid who were using Procreate and other digital drawing tools on their computers. So, I finally bought an iPad and got the program. These are my early experiments - its inspiring to try and fail and find little glimmers of the potential for success- it is a motivator to be sure.

After studying art at the Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr) and UBC, I taught art to children and adults for a while and then followed other paths. Once my children were grown I returned to art-making, focusing on acrylic and watercolour painting, plus paper maché and printmaking. Since 2013 I've been painting abstracts and was a member of the Wednesday Abstract Group mentored by Bill Porteous. Recently I've been involved with the Gage Artists Collective and Gallery and am now happy to be a studio member at XChanges.
These paintings are developed through layering acrylic paint, mark-making, and sometimes collage. I work intuitively from what emerges as I paint.

Untitled (Big), oil paint on wood panel, 14 x 14 inches, 2021, $400
Richard Motchman I was born in 1960 in Mombasa, Kenya. My family migrated to Canada when I was three, we settled in Penticton, B.C. As a child, I did lots of drawing and "art”, but when I was a teenager I read about Vincent van Gogh which inspired in me the notion to be an artist. I attended the University of Victoria, Victoria, B.C. from 1978 to 1982, earning a B.F.A., having majored in visual arts. It was at university that I started creating three-dimensional figures, initially made out of paper. Three-dimensional figure paintings made with canvas and resin were the focus of my artmaking for decades. In 1982 I travelled for six months in Europe, spending most of my time in art museums. The experience of Renaissance, Baroque, Realist, Impressionist and Expressionist art seen in all its glory had a great impact on me and has shaped my art a great deal. In 1983 I joined Xchanges and have been involved with the artist co-operative ever since. My first interactive paintings were created in 1998 and, in various forms, have been the focus of my art practise ever since. I focus on interactive painting because they make time and movement elements of painting and provide the viewer with the opportunity to make choices and in a sense collaborate in the painting. My paintings have been exhibited in solo exhibitions in British Columbia and group exhibitions in Canada and the USA. My work is in private collections in Canada, the USA, and England.
Untitled (Nature) In this series of paintings, each painting uses the forms and colours of a specific, observed landscape. With the focus on areas of nature that involve chaotic complexity it is sought that the imagery can breakdown due to the complexity and diversity of colours and marks moving toward a visual “abstraction”. For the viewer these paintings are to teeter back and forth between representation and “abstraction”; with the focused involved these paintings seek to inspire in viewers an engagement with the beautiful and complex details of nature. These are studio paintings using source photos taken by the artist.

Andy Shutse Lou, Silent Land Mixed media on rice paper 27X17" 2018 $1200
Andy Shutse Lou Master of Fine Arts Andy Lou, a renowned working artist in Victoria, B.C. was born in China and educated in the United States. Vibrant colour plays an important role in his art. He blends the old and the new to forge a contrast between ink and colour, between the ancient traditions of Chinese painting and the rapidly-changing world of Western art. Andy's mixed media, cross-cultural paintings have been exhibited and collected worldwide and he has received numerous awards. Andy is also a writer, he is the author and the co-author of total four books on Chinese Brush Painting.
My paintings are personal investigations into the interaction between Eastern and Western culture. They express how I see and feel about my subject; how I interpret it intuitively and spiritually by using visual language. I adapt a variety of techniques and thoughts from the West, but emphasize my oriental originality. I employ Chinese brushes, rice paper and ink, mixing with watercolour, gouache and acrylic to create visual statements of the landscape of North America. Chinese ink, the essential material of Chinese Brush Painting, remains a dominant element in my work, but vibrant colour plays an important role. I blend the old and the new to forge a contrast between ink and colour, between the ancient traditions of Chinese painting and the rapidly-changing world of Western art. “Lifelike spirit” is the source of all great art. However, I pay more attention to the artistic forms, shapes and vitality of the objects. The purpose of my landscape painting is not to explain the world, but rather to pursue a universal balance between nature and the artist. Art must be natural yet spontaneous.

Michael Cranny, Riitual Object 13, Acrylic on canvas 48"x36" 750$
I have been sculpting and painting for over 40 years. My art journey began when I found a discarded pile of soapstone on the road to the Vanderhoof dump, and decided to carve a chess set out of it. Winters are long in Vanderhoof! I graduated as an archaeologist. Archaeology and myth have almost been important to me, and inform much of my art. My sculpture tends to be represenational, while my painting is much more abstract. Oddly enough, I feel a strong connection both to abstract expressionism, and to medieval and early Renaissance art. Go figure!
Ritual Object 13 combines abstract principles with early Renaissance decorative styles. The colours, and the gold highlights, produce, I think, very nice vibrations. The composition ensures that elements work togerther and separately to ensure the work never gets stale or uninteresting.
