Online Gallery – Covid LIFE: Virtual Drawing in the Time of Covid
Group Exhibition – Online December 12, 2020
Welcome to the online exhibition Covid LIFE: Virtual Drawing in the Time of Covid.
To view the works, click on a name to filter the images by artist or model (have an (M) or (A) next to their name), or images with reflections. The filter list is also at the bottom of the page. Mouse over each image to see a preview of the title and reflection of the work if there is one. Click on an image to open the full screen lightbox to click through each image.
We appreciated the positive feedback from the 62+ attendees to our virtual opening and streaming event on Zoom and Facebook Live. We played a breakout game which was a kind of treasure hunt through the exhibitions and used some leading questions to help folks get going – there is a lot of work to view. Folks requested that we post them here:

Reflection: Being at home in my studio really allowed me to experiment in a way I haven't been able to in a group setting. I have access to different materials and I have been free to get messy with paint and collage. It also helped me stay focused on creating even in a very unfocused time!

Reflection: I thought the hair worked and “some” likeness to the model Arunima...When you see a mirror image its easy to see the mistakes I made….better next time…maybe …

Reflection: I’m probably a little strange. Because, when I approach a short figure pose, I’m never aiming for likeness. Likeness is coincidental. I approach value, I approach shapes, I approach connections and breaking points, implications, and ham-fisted statements. This way nothing is wrong. Nothing is out of place. I just have to find what moves the viewer by capturing what I feel from the model. It really simplifies things, and makes it a lot more fun. My only real constraint is that it needs to be believable. It needs to make just enough sense.

Reflection: Portrait drawing is teaching me so much - especially since it is online, which I have never done before. I find it amazing that after so many years of being away from life drawing that I can produce anything at all -but there it is. I am so thrilled with meeting all these artists and models; I hope one day we can meet in person.

Reflection from the model:
Modelling on line was being like on TV. in a way. Fun listening and imagining what everyone is up to. Sippin' coffee, eating, cat on the lap, and sketching up a storm. Sometimes I see the final result of the artist expressions from Victoria to California.

Reflection: I am immune compromised, I have CMML leukemia. Chemotherapy keeps it in
check, but it is difficult to attend workshops and group events.
Drawing via zoom has expanded the world of art opportunities.
It is no-longer limited by location. It is a joy to meet a wide variety of artists,
models and the facilitators who bring them forward.
The possibility’s are endless, now within a safe environment.
All things considered, I’m having one heck of a fun time.

Reflection from Natasha:
As an art model of many years, I appreciated the use of Zoom for online art sessions. I am an artist as well, and being reconnected with an art community remotely has been much needed during this time. Using Zoom has its quirks though! Choosing the perspective for the artists of what they're going to see of me on the screen has been challenging, as I know with also being an artist you'd want to choose for yourself, making sure the lighting is right, and that my internet connection is good! Also setting up for a Zoom session alone in my art studio felt a bit lonely, sitting for a pose just with myself and my lights around me, especially when everyone was silent/deep into concentration during the session. What has been very cool is the ability to have artists from all over the world join in, and to see the artists I do know from town continue with their artistic practices through this online platform. I'm glad we've been able to stay creative together. - Miss Natasha Enquist, http://missnatashaenquist-modelportfolio.blogspot.com, Instagram:@missnatashaenquist

drawing of Tara Fergus. Reflection: I had so much fun I’m sending them all. Thank you for an inspiring class. It’s been several years since I last drew a live model, and today’s session reminded me of the dynamic exchange that takes place between model and sketcher. Such a joyful process during these difficult times!
Beautiful work! Everyone is an inspiration!
I really enjoyed “attending” the opening. Thank you Heidi for inviting me. I will never forget the Labour Art Project!
Stunning work. Especially from Tenli Yavneh. I have no idea how she gets the human body to look the way it actually does.
