Artist Statement
Printmakers are first and foremost, makers of marks. They make a scratch, etch a line, build a shape, or carve a groove. Then they ask those marks to hold ink, the final step before the paper story is revealed. This process-oriented art form, from the creation of the plate to the final mark on paper, is how I tell my stories. For as long as I can recall, I have always wanted to be a marine biologist. How a kid from the Great Lakes region developed this obsession is a mystery even to myself. Oddly, it wasnโt whales or seals that grabbed my interest, it was to the darkness of the seafloor that I gravitated to. My passion for the benthos turned me into a mudlark, but my treasure isn’t a medieval coin or a bit of ceramic, rather it is the animals that live their lives by the tides. It is their marks that I hunt for.

About the Artist
Cindy Wright is a printmaker and oceanographic scientist who lives in North Saanich, BC. She is primarily self-taught but has been mentored over the last 20 years by well-known printmakers in the technical skills of planographic and intaglio methods. She has a 25+ year history working as a marine scientist, from intertidal to abyssal plains of the Northeast Pacific. Her passion for marine life, its beauty and its perfection of form led her to take traditional printmaking techniques and apply new materials to continue the long tradition of nature printing to capture her awe of nature.
Field Notes: Impressions from the Pacific, represents three years of effort in developing her experimental methods in printmaking.
