April Winter

I, Vanitas

February 8 to 23, 2025

Artist Statement

My photography is often inspired by thinking about alternate histories and possible futures. I explore these ideas using self-portraiture to examine my own time and place in the world and use film to continue the historic legacy of photography. I created I, Vanitas by delving into the rich history of western symbolism while also criticizing the westโ€™s lust for wealth, immortality and pleasure both historically and in the present. Using 17th century Dutch still life style, which, in itself symbolizes wealth and opulence, Iโ€™ve created seven images, each addressing a different subject and moral examination.

Through the medium of dream imagery, I seek to create a space for viewers to connect with the universal language of dreams. The artworks serve as a conduit, allowing the observer to explore the interconnected threads of their own subconscious minds.
