Twelve emerging sculptors come together to present their diverse practices in two consecutive exhibitions. The title literally refers to a program of action to be followed by the artists; the sculpture must include either the colour red or black and cannot be over one cubic metre in scale. Scheme 1 will showcase sculptures produced with the colour black and Scheme 2 will present works utilizing the colour red.
The title also refers to an underhanded plot with elements of intrigue and mischief. This concept is most apparent in each individual work. There are sculptures that draw you in with interactivity. However, expectations for play are quickly overthrown by aspects of noise and danger. Some of the works challenge our physical perception of space and utilize materials in unexpected ways. Savvy, technological processes are counterbalanced with relics from the past and some very delicate techniques are used to comment on the ephemeral nature of culture.
There are also sculptures that experiment with process to produce form; exploring how residue from previous projects can come together to create a new work.
Scheme presents fresh, exciting and thoughtfully produced sculptures. Individually and as a group the artists widen our understanding of contemporary art practices.
