Regan Rasmussen

safety within

February 3 – 19, 2023

Xchanges Gallery is thrilled to announce the opening on February 3, 2023 of Regan Rasmussen’s solo exhibition, safety within.

When the pandemic hit in March 2020, Rasmussen turned inward to process the overwhelming situation. As she worked in solitude in the studio, questions arose: How do we deal with adversity both physically and spiritually? And, as a community, how do we collectively support each other?

Works in this exhibition are informed by time spent in the studio over months of social distancing and isolation due to the global pandemic. Since the onset of the pandemic there has been time for turning inward. Time for sanctuary and quiet, darkness and melancholy, and renewed gratitude for people whose support makes a positive difference. Although the worst of the pandemic appears to be over, feelings of trepidation continually surface.

“It’s been said that adversity introduces us to ourselves,” notes the artist. Safety within is a site-specific installation contemplating how individuals and communities seek sanctuary during times of adversity. The viewer is invited to become immersed in a meditative space created by layers of translucent drawings to reflect, take pause, and connect to their own experience.
