Elyse Portal’s art practice seeks to acknowledge landscape, whether urban or ecologically intact, as a place to engage in dialogue and relationship.
Although born into a family of European descent, Portal has always felt an innate affinity to nature: more as kin. Philosopher Richard Tarnas, in Is the Modern Psyche Undergoing a Rite of Passage, petitions Western culture to explore the “wider epistemologies of the heart,” in order to develop “the capacity to open to the other” and listen.
Urbeing is an exploration of the quiet moments of reprieve between mind-chatter, where the world speaks. From her conversations with the environment, Portal will produce paintings directly on the walls of the gallery with locally sourced clay.
Join Elyse Portal on June 23, 2012 at 7:00 pm for a group meditative sitting on the Xchanges balcony, and observe your connection to the cityscape.
