Flagging the Balcony

A balcony is intended to be a poetic space-for breathing fresh air and soaking in the Sun.  However, being a perfectly utilitarian balcony, like the ones in common North American motels or Japanese two story apartments, sometimes it ceases to be known as a balcony; for the balcony is the hallway and the hallway is the balcony.  Although it may be a space that is sparsely trafficked, it speaks precisely to the idea of ‘presence.’
