Xchanges Summer 2026 Atelier

Date: Saturday, June 27, 2026

Time: 9:30am-4:30pm

Xchanges is excited to announce a new Summer Atelier – Capturing the Wrack Line: Printing what the tide brings in with Cindy Wright. No experience is required – all are welcome.

Maximum 10 participants.

This is another Atelier fundraising event for Xchanges – all proceeds go to support Gallery operations.

Description

Discover the hidden artistry of the shoreline in this hands-on experimental printmaking workshop. Using algae gathered from the wrack line of a local beach — the rich band of seaweed, shells, driftwood, and marine treasures left behind by the tide — participants will create striking botanical prints inspired by the rhythms of the ocean.

Working with both fresh and pressed specimens, we’ll experiment with a variety of inks, papers, and printing techniques to uncover intricate textures, bold silhouettes, and beautifully detailed impressions. Each print becomes a collaboration between nature and process, with plenty of room for curiosity, surprise, and creative play.

Designed for beginners and experienced makers alike, this workshop embraces exploration over perfection. We’ll use water-soluble and water-miscible inks only — no harsh chemicals or solvents — making cleanup simple with just soap and water. Participants will also learn approachable, low-cost hand-printing methods that can easily be continued at home long after the workshop ends.

Come ready to explore, experiment, and see the beach in an entirely new way. Sign up today to ensure your spot!

Atelier Learning Goals

  • Have fun and learn something new
  • Experiment with different techniques
  • Meet new people in a safe learning environment

About the Instructor

Cindy Wright is a printmaker and oceanographic scientist living on Vancouver Island. She is primarily self-taught but has been mentored over the last 20 years by well-known printmakers in the technical skills of planographic and intaglio methods. She has a 25+ year history working as a marine scientist, from intertidal to abyssal plains of the Northeast Pacific. Her passion for marine life, its beauty and its perfection of form led her to take traditional printmaking techniques and apply new materials to continue the long tradition of nature printing.

Materials

All materials will be provided by the instructor. If participants have special papers they wish to try out, they are welcome to bring them.

Fees

Workshop: $80 members, $90 non-members
Materials: $20 – pay the instructor cash at the workshop

Registration deadline: June 21, 2026

Please note: we are sorry, the Gallery is not accessible for persons with physical disability as there are 2 flights of stairs.

Refunds:

  • If Xchanges cancels a workshop, participants will receive a 100% refund.
  • If an artist cancels 7 days prior to the workshop, they will receive 100% MINUS the processing fees that Square has applied to their purchase.
  • If an artist cancels less than 7 days before the workshop, they will receive a refund of 50% of the total amount, less the Square fees.

Why is this policy being implemented

a) The use of the Square payment portal, like any system, charges Xchanges a percentage of the amount charged. When participants cancel, Xchanges has already paid that processing fee and as such is now at a loss for that payment.
b) Workshops will often proceed based on the number of participants who signed up for it. When participants cancel with only a few days until the workshop, that does not give us sufficient time to find someone to fill the spot to allow us to recoup that loss. It also allows us to continue to run a workshop with less than the minimum attendance that might be required.
