Xchanges is excited to announce a new Fall Atelier – Textile Cyanotype & Mixed Media. Join Heidi Bergstrom from Xchanges Gallery and Kate Seymour of Crossgrain Photography Society for this fun and experimental Atelier featuring cyanotype on fabric and mixed media.
This is another Atelier fundraising event for Xchanges – all proceeds go to support Gallery operations. Due to the intensive nature of the Atelier, space is limited to 6 participants.
Description
In keeping with previous Ateliers, we will be in full-on experimentation and learning mode. Using found objects and custom-made negatives we will create our cyanotypes in a light box (and outside if there is enough sun that day), plus using a variety of inks, paints, drawing materials, and threads, yarns, and other textile materials we will create and transform our cyanotype fabric pieces. Xchanges will also be providing some sewing machines and materials to further embellish your work. Participants will also learn about machine-embroidery and can experiment with creating small pieces on a Janome 550e Limited Edition embroidery machine. Particpants are welcome and encouraged to bring their own sewing or embroidery machine if available. This is going to be a unique experience!
Atelier Learning Goals
- Introduction to cyanotype history, processes and materials using an UV lightbox – will include how to make your own negatives suitable for exposure, using natural materials and objects for exposure. We will also cover using the A/B solution for fabric or paper.
- Opportunity for experimentation and developing confidence using multiple materials, techiniques (both hand and machine made) to create a series of works on fabric.
- Tips and tricks for taking these processes back to your studio or home work areas or on the road.
- Learn about your colleagues and their work in a fun and mutually supportive space.
Materials
Materials included in the workshop fees are for the cyanotype fabrics and papers that will be utilized during the workshop as well as stabilizers for machine embroidery pieces. Participants will be sent a list of materials and tools to bring prior to the Atelier that includes creating your own negatives in advance or sending the instructor 1-2 images you would like to use as a negative if needed (a small cost recovery fee will apply). A variety of multimedia materials including optional fabrics, inks, and watercolours, brushes, pencils, crayons etc. will also be available to share. Participants are encouraged to bring their favourite materials from the list to be provided. The leaders will have some materials to borrow and/or purchase.
