Summer Residency

Rick Thomas

Xchanges Gallery is delighted to announce our Inaugural Summer Residency!

Commencing July 1st 2016, our first Artist in Residence is Rick Thomas. Gallery hours are:
• Monday-Tuesday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm;
• Wednesday Noon to 5:00 pm; and
• Thursday-Friday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Over the summer months Rick will be working in our gallery space to create a mural installation. There will be several Open Studio dates, during which the public can visit Rick in his ‘studio’ and see the progress of the mural. As well, he will be inviting local groups to the gallery/studio for discussions and workshops. At the end of August Rick will present a final exhibition gala.

Rick will be promoting his own efforts and works through local media outlets, but he will also rely heavily on his blog ( and Facebook presence. He invites you to visit these as well as on our Xchanges Facebook page for up-to-date details of the events taking place.

Rick’s mural(s) will feature deconstructed cardboard boxes, reconstructed and pinned in place. He will draw, using pastel, conte and charcoal, directly onto the cardboard canvas. His images come from his worldly sketchbooks and photographs, creating a vision of how he visualizes the people and places around him.

Artist’s Bio:
Rick graduated with an Associate of Arts Commercial and Fine Arts from the Vancouver School of Art. Upon graduation, he worked at several high profile retailers in their promotion and design departments. He then worked in marketing with the Victoria YM-YWCA and, before his retirement, worked at a cartographic and graphic arts specialist for the Province of British Columbia specializing in ecology, conservation and geographic information systems. He is associated with several local artistic associations.
