Artist Talk — Friday, Jan. 9th, 7:30 pm

Xchanges Gallery is pleased to present “Oscillatio” a collaborative exhibition of new work by artists Sarah Cowan and Connie Michele Morey. Cowan and Morey’s work focuses on the back and forth reverberation of their overlapping artistic practices in felt, paper, and mixed media.

Oscillatio consists of installation-based work produced over a year of collaborative exchange between artists Sarah Cowan and Connie Morey. Their informal visits to each other’s studios, drumming practice, personal, philosophical and studio exchanges about the rhythms of life have resulted in the unfolding of a resonant body of work that highlights their practices as individuals submerged in a community.

Sarah Cowan graduated from Vancouver Island School of Art in 2011 and currently is a studio member of Gallery 1580 where she is also the resident curator. Her studio practice engages textual forms in cut paper, pen, ink, oil paint, and thread to produce a contemplative record of the intrinsic connections emerging from the ebb and flow of life lived. Connie Michele Morey is an artist, writer, and instructor at the University of Victoria and Vancouver Island School of Art where she teaches courses in sculpture and contemporary craft. Her work in sculptural felting, fibre, and mixed media explores the continuous opening and closing of the membranes of the individual through the syncopation of the rhythms of shared experience. Cowan and Morey’s collaborative interests in contemporary craft and symbiotic practice have resulted in an installation which acts as a resounding conversation between the artists and the viewer.
