O.Bjorn Cross’ exhibition Leather Mourning invites us to participate in the intimate timeless ritual of queer collective grief. Focussing on the impact of HIV / AIDS and how historical queer leather communities experienced loss together, he highlights similarities and differences in how these communities’ contemporary counterparts participate in grief.

Cross uses found and altered objects, text based work, containers, and fabricated artifacts to showcase these findings, mourn his queer ancestors, and hold the loss of his father in a communal mourning rather than alone.

Viewers are invited to bring their own grief into this exhibition, feel others, and mourn together, however that may look.

About the Artist

O.Bjorn Cross is a queer and disabled interdisciplinary artist living and working on lək̓ wəŋən territory in so called “Victoria BC”.

His work primarily explores themes of Queer history, memorial, fetish, masculinity, and bodies (often trans and disabled) in their vulnerable and erotic states. These concepts are explored through text based work, photography, painting, sculpture or anything he can get his hands on. He graduated in 2022 from Camosun College with a diploma in visual arts with distinction and from the University of Victoria in 2025 with an Honors BFA . Alongside his own emerging practice and curatorial projects, he is a dedicated community organizer and has served on multiple Non Profit boards for art organizations and sexual education organizations.
