Connie Michele Morey
“Antebody engages the ante-act of placing the body at the forefront, both by working with bodily gestural processes of felting, embroidery and paper cutting, and by conceptually exploring the questions of what it means to negotiate the body—materialities which are not entirely ours to control, our anti-bodies, bodies which tire without us willing them so, which become ill, which are colonised by the other, inhabit others and are continually mutated, imagined and re-imagined.” — Morey, Cowan, Weymar
Artist Bios:
Connie Michele Morey is an artist, writer, curator and teacher whose work negotiates the politics of marginalization—those normative social practices that relegate particular groups to the peripheries. Her current studio practice includes the permeable genres of installation, sculpture, contemporary craft, performance, artist’s books, and critical-creative writing. She received her BFA (Visual Arts) from the University of Lethbridge in 1995, and a M.Ed and PhD from the University of Victoria. She is currently an active studio member at arc.hive, a new artist-run-centre in Victoria. She has exhibited and presented locally and nationally, as well as in England, Portugal, and Malaysia; her writing has been published in exhibition catalogues, as well as academic, art, and creative writing journals.
