Seeing Time

A photograph is more than a static image. It is a slice of life, pulled from the stream of time, held still for us to study and reflect upon. When we consider the element of time within a photograph, when we look beyond the surface of what is captured and start reflecting on the when and the why, our experience of viewing is transformed. Time gives depth to a photograph, connecting us to a broader story. It deepens and reminds us that no image is ever truly static as traces of what came before and hints at what might come after are invoked. Does a mindful inclusion transform the experience into a meditation on a moment?
When you study a photograph, pause and consider how time inhabits it.
Barry Herring’s interest in time is a continuation of his exploration of the temporal context of our lives. ‘Passing thru Life’ (2016), ‘In Transit’ (2018), and ‘Never Wait, Never Late’ (2022), have explored parallel themes. His current interest is producing work that focuses on the element of time in an image. Graphic novels, bookmaking, the art of Teju Cole, Olafur Eliasson, and Philip-Lorca di Corcia are current influences.
