Expand is about an interplay between Nature, Science, and the Cosmos, informed by Thompson’s interests in geology (crystalline structures), geometry, colour theory and metaphysical experiences.

In this multi-paneled painting installation the entire wall operates as the “field”, engaging viewers on a physical level. It presents the Quantum Physics idea that in the universe, nothing is still and everything is in some form of motion. Thompson’s paintings are a form of liquid, fluid thoughts: multi-layered and multi-dimensional. Using a personal pictorial language, she interconnects her interests in a discursive, topical, open-ended and intuitive process. It involves exploring the independent life of paint in the wet-in-wet technique, transparent layering of colour and form, and spontaneous linear mark making.

Thompson’s work also metaphorically addresses the dichotic contemporary life issues of connection and separation; order and chaos; stillness and movement. It is revealed that these issues can simultaneously co-exist. In the dialogue between all elements of form and line, the work emerges from the Ethers into the field; the grid/ground. It is the artist’s intent that her work operates outside of the dimensional confinement engaging viewers in an expansive and unique experience of reality.
