Going the Distance:
Communication Towers

Maureen Calkins

This exhibition opens on Friday, September 7th, 7:00 PM
Exhibition runs through Sunday, September 30th, 2012
Gallery Hours: Saturdays and Sundays, 12 to 4 pm

Communication towers hover high above the landscape: unseen frequencies are made visible with lines that appear to pulsate and move in all directions throughout this work. The need to communicate drives scientists and technologists to continually design innovative and faster systems. High tech communication is vital to financial, political and social institutions.

Maureen Calkins questions technology and how it affects our lives, what impact it has world-wide and how we can control it, adjust to the constant changes or simply ignore it. By painting about communication towers and energy fields, she opens up a discussion about the role communication plays in our lives.

Our NEXT Balcony Gallery Exhibition:

Anna Curtin’s “Wind & Sea”

Opens Saturday, September 8th, 2012, 2–4:00 PM
Exhibition runs to Sunday, September 30th, 2012.

Xchanges Gallery on the Balcony is pleased to present
“Wind & Sea”, a solo exhibition of new abstract textile work by Anna Curtin. Please join us on Saturday September 8th, at 2–4 pm, for the exhibition opening and to meet the artist.

This balcony exhibit draws on the traditional crafts of spinning and knitting. The materials are infused with the essence of sea and air through prolonged exposure to tides, wind and rain. Some materials are kite-gliding sails that have flown the skies and dunked in the Salish Sea. Curtin has used these materials to shape abstract twisted forms of colour echoing the seascape.
